TRAILL, (Catherine Parr)
Lost in the backwoods: A Tale of the Canadian Forest
London, T. Nelson and Sons, 1886
8vo, hardcover, blue pictorial cloth binding, gilded title to spine, viii-319 pp.; good copy, slight wear to edges and corners of binding
Third printing of this new edition The Canadian Crusoes, first published under the new title “Lost in the Backwoods: A Tale of the Canadian Forest” by T. Nelson in 1882. Substantially different from its predecessors, one of the most striking differences was the addition of twenty illustrations to the original twelve by Harvey. All subsequent Nelson issues to 1896 can only be distinguished by their title pages and casings. Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was an English pioneer writer and botanist. In 1832 Traill immigrated to Canada with her husband Thomas Traill, a retired lieutenant, and settled on the Otonabee River near Peterborough. She was one of the literary Strickland sisters and is known for her descriptions of early pioneer life in Upper Canada.
